Founder Kate Falk, M.Ed. is a licensed reading specialist who has worked in public and private schools and in private practice for 20 years.

Her speciality is working with children who struggle as readers and writers and to craft and implement instruction that guides them into competent and confident readers, writers and learners.

When Kate started her study at Harvard Graduate School of Education, she had no experience as an educator.  She had studied Japanese and Literacy Studies as an undergraduate.  Within weeks of enrolling and starting to train in the HGSE Literacy Lab, Kate was working as a literacy tutor in local elementary schools.  She witnessed immediate literacy growth in her students and felt empowered as an educator.

The inspiration for Tutoring Families grew out of this experience.  Just as she grew into a qualified and effective tutor with a little education and a lot of support in those first few weeks of graduate school, Kate knows that parents, too, can be taught to become powerful literacy tutors to their children.  To be successful, parents need to know what skills are essential, how to develop those skill areas and that there is an expert to turn to for support and guidance.  Seeing this happen on a case by case level with many, many clients, Kate decided to create an online program, The Literacy Lifestyle, to reach more families who want to know how to support their children’s early literacy learning at home.

Kate offers in-person and virtual reading therapy to children who struggle to develop literacy skills.  She uses the Orton-Gillingham method of multi-sensory reading instruction.  Click here to schedule reading therapy with Kate.  In addition to offering direct reading therapy to the child, Kate can provide support to parents and caregivers who are interested in tutoring their own child.  Families find this approach academically beneficial, and it saves families thousands of dollars in reading therapy costs.
